Regular Pipette Service Assures Lab Compliance - METTLER TOLEDO

Regular Pipette Service Assures Lab Compliance

Sealing system For GMP labs subject to government regulation, regular pipette service
and calibration isn’t even a question. But what about non-GMP labs, such
as R&D? Wherever accuracy and repeatability of results matter, a
program for calibration and maintenance is the surest way to achieve and
maintain high-level pipetting performance with the fewest out-of-tolerance
failures.

Like any precision instrument, pipettes require regular servicing in order to maintain peak performance. They are comprised of a variety of mechanical parts that, like all things mechanical, wear out over time:

  • In the case of pipettes, it is the seals that are most prone to wear. They usually perform for up to a year or more without leaking depending on pipette usage.
  • Over time, shaft ends can get damaged especially when a high force or ‘banging’ occurs when mounting tips.
  • Piston surfaces can deteriorate from shiny and clean to pitted especially when using aggressive or corrosive samples, leading to premature seal failure and pipette inaccuracy.
95% of all pipette failures relate to sealing system wear

Leakage often starts gradually and may not be discovered until well after the accuracy and integrity of your research is compromised. However, a lab’s internal pipette failure rate can be significantly reduced via a program for regular maintenance and calibration.

Based on our extensive experience and under normal use, seals should be replaced at least once a year and shafts every year or so while pistons will provide good performance for at least several years before needing replacement.

METTLER TOLEDO offers a variety of calibration and preventive maintenance program options to suit all budgets and applications.
