Better base numbers in oil industry – by conductometric titration

The measurement of the lubricant acid or base number by titration is a challenging task. An improvement in speed, consistency and repeatability of the results can be achieved if the determination is carried out by conductometric titration according to the IP400 standard. The METTLER TOLEDO Titration Excellence T70 titrator enables you to benefit from the advantages of this standard determination.
Challenges in potentiometric titrations
Monitoring of the titrant and electrode condition and verification prior to analysis start, dedicated methods with optimized parameters, and ease of use are some of the striking features of the new METTLER TOLEDO Titration Excellence T70 titrator. They help you achieve reliable results in acid or base number determinations according to the IP177/276 (ASTM D664/D2896/D4739) standards. However, the analyses are time-consuming because the potentiometric electrodes require extended conditioning, and the quality of the results strongly depends on correct system preparation (titer, blank and buffer values).

Conductometric titrations with the T70
A true alternative is conductometric titration according to the IP400 standard. The combination of the InLab®718 conductivity probe and the conductivity option of the METTLER TOLEDO Titration Excellence T70 titrator provide a unique solution and full compliance with this standard. Conductometric titration allows you to achieve precise and accurate results in base and acid number determinations with rapid signal equilibration and without time-consuming electrode conditioning steps during the individual analyses. Furthermore, the lifetime of the conductometric sensor is considerably longer than that of the potentiometric sensor.
Results
The results of the conductometric titration series are in good accordance with the comparative values and show an excellent precision. The difference in BN values obtained via conductometric or potentiometric titration is caused by the different sample ages on the respective analysis dates. The short titration times are impressive: With respect to potentiometric titration conditions (fast or extended measured value acquisition), conductometric BN titrations are 2 to 20 times faster. Not including the electrode conditioning which is not required for a conductivity probe.
