Lying 145 kilometers north of the arctic circle, Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden. It is a highly challenging environment, and home to a huge industrial iron ore mining operation. The mining company relies on high-performance weighing equipment to be up to the task.
The Swedish mining company Luossavaara-Kirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) was founded in 1890, and now operates the largest and most state-of-the-art iron ore mine in the world. The LKAB mine in Kiruna extracts and distributes iron ore pellets. To do this, pellets are transported via rail cars, each weighing 121 tons.
Naturally, each rail car must be weighed. This is done by three METTLER TOLEDO coupled-in-motion rail weighing systems, each located at a different step in the process. These dynamic weighing systems allow LKAB to weigh the rail cars as they are moving, providing an efficient process.
Extreme temperatures can have an effect on precision equipment. Kiruna experiences temperature differences of up to 70° Celsius (158° Fahrenheit) throughout the course of the year. Of course, this was a major concern for LKAB, but POWERCELL® load cells have proven their performance in extreme environments. Regardless of the season, the mine enjoys reliable performance from their METTLER TOLEDO scales.
From Death Valley to Antarctica, METTLER TOLEDO weighing systems offer the high performance that many organizations demand. See what this can mean for you.
