METTLER TOLEDO and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Win Best of ITS Award

METTLER TOLEDO, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation Office of Motor Carrier Compliance, received the "Best New Innovative Products or Services" Award at the ITS America 2009 Annual Meeting—Best of ITS Awards on June 1, 2009.

The Best of ITS Awards is the only program in the world that honors the most innovative, effective, and influential achievements in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) industry. This highly competitive program recognizes the organizations whose projects have demonstrated specific and measurable outcomes and exemplified innovation by establishing a "new dimension" of performance.

METTLER TOLEDO/State of Florida–Ensure the Protection of Infrastructure and Safety of the Traveling Public
As a solution to frequent closing and trucks bypassing at the State of Florida’s Interstate 4 (I-4) weigh station, METTLER TOLEDO worked together with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Office of Motor Carrier Compliance (OMCC) to develop a new weigh station facility that includes the integration of Weigh In Motion (WIM) scales, Vehicle Dimension In Motion (VDIM), License Plate Reader (LPR), and an overview image of vehicle.

The new automated I-4 weigh station addresses the increase in volume of commercial truck traffic on I-4 by providing compliance checks (weight, dimensions, and vehicle identification) while the vehicle is in motion at speeds of 50 mph. This significantly increases the station’s throughput as only those vehicles with high probability of violations are directed to the static scale and stopped for further investigation.

Not only does the new automated system address the increased traffic, but the system technologies developed by METTLER TOLEDO have also increased inspection and enforcement activities by providing high-tech equipment to identify and stop weight overloads, permitted loads, overdue citations, and criminal infractions. These checks are performed while the vehicle travels in motion through the deceleration ramp, and only violators are directed to the static scales and stopped. Non-violators are immediately directed back to the interstate, increasing throughput and enforcement activities.

FDOT OMCC immediately recognized that the system had the ability to process every vehicle; the weigh stations no longer needed to close due to heavy traffic volumes, and hazardous highway backups were eliminated. The long waits for statically weighing were reduced by a factor of five times (15 minutes to 3 minutes). Increases in violations were also noticed as the integrated screening technologies provided by the METTLER TOLEDO system supplied operators with all the required data.

The entire system has been developed as a modular design so components can be added or removed to accommodate various applications. This also allows components to be added and integrated to existing weigh stations without a large cost or impact on the facility.

About ITS America
The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) was established in 1991 as a not-for-profit organization to foster the use of advanced technologies in surface transportation systems. They are the leading advocate for technologies that improve the safety, security and efficiency of the nation’s surface transportation system. The formation of ITS America was motivated by the recognition that while numerous existing organizations were actively involved in transportation issues, no single organization existed to focus exclusive attention on emerging technologies. Members include private corporations, public agencies, and academic institutions involved in the research, development and design of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies to enhance safety, increase mobility, and sustain the environment.
