Small businesses need to do their homework when making big investments. The owners of A-1 Salvage studied their options carefully before buying a truck scale for their new scrap iron facility. What they discovered was that METTLER TOLEDO offered the best value for their money.

Blake Dozier and his family own A-1 Salvage, a small metal recycling company in Abilene, Texas. With 20 years of experience in the recycling business, they had been looking into the possibility of starting a scrap iron facility. The low prices of scrap metal in recent years had kept them from expanding. But when prices began to rise again in early 2010, the family decided the time was right to enter the market.

The new A-1 Salvage scrap iron facility buys small lots of metal from individuals and local businesses and then sorts it for bulk sale to the local steel mill. Because scrap metal is purchased and sold by weight, the company needed a truck scale. As Blake Dozier notes, “You really can’t be in this business without one.”

The Best Value
A truck scale is a significant investment for a small business. So Dozier knew it was important to get the best value. Since the company already had a Rice Lake floor scale, he got a quote for a Rice Lake truck scale from the same local scale supplier. He also asked for a quote on a METTLER TOLEDO truck scale from Rusty’s Weigh, an authorized METTLER TOLEDO distributor in nearby Lubbock, Texas.

Although the prices for the two scales were comparable, Dozier noticed that the METTLER TOLEDO warranty was significantly more comprehensive. While researching the METTLER TOLEDO scale on the Internet, he learned about the benefits of the new POWERCELL® PDX® load cell technology. With its self-monitoring capability and superior lightning protection, this technology provides unmatched security against unplanned downtime.

He also talked to a colleague in Fort Worth who was very satisfied with his own METTLER TOLEDO truck scale. These factors made the buying decision easy. According to Dozier, “As a small company, we have to be careful when spending this much money. We saw the best value with a METTLER TOLEDO solution.”

Satisfied Customer
A-1 Salvage purchased a VTC221 concrete deck truck scale with POWERCELL PDX load cells. The system includes a traffic light at each end of the scale, making it easy to manage inbound and outbound traffic. An IND560 scale terminal equipped with a ticket printer provides weight tickets for the loads of scrap metal that are bought and sold.

Perhaps the feature that both customers and truck drivers like most is the large remote display that is visible from the scale. Truck drivers even use it to get an estimate of their axle weights as they pull onto the scale.

The owners of A-1 Salvage feel very good about the truck scale they chose. It provides the highest possible weighing accuracy, helping them deliver on their slogan: Fast Service, Honest Weights, Fair Prices. They also have a service contract with Rusty’s Weigh to keep the scale in great shape. The low-profile weighbridge is installed above ground, simplifying maintenance.

A-1 Salvage was able to combine the best weighing technology on the market with the best warranty and lowest total cost of ownership. All of that makes for a very happy customer.
