The customer feeds hundreds of drums of chemicals a day. As chemicals feed out of the drum, they must stop the process before the drum is completely empty and switch to a new drum. This ensures that no air feeds into the system. Previously, they had no way to tell when a drums levels were low or empty. They wanted a scale that they could use to program low level setpoints to improve their productivity and reduce waste.
With the help of METTLER TOLEDO’s systems group and product team, a fully integrated solution was provided. The customer received a single enclosure with LYNX controller, two high level outputs and an analog output card. The LYNX controller excels in accurate, flexible and reliable control of material delivery by weight. It can also withstand harsh environments, making it ideal for the washdown, corrosion-protection and sanitation requirements of chemical production environments. This system allows Micron to identify the levels of each drum through the various setpoints. The first setpoint lights a pilot light in the control room to let an operator know that the drum is low. The second setpoint lets the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) know that the drum is empty and causes the PLC to switch to the next drum. In addition, the analog output card allows the data recorder to show chemical usage.
The customer had a second problem, they had very little room for scales, especially ones that could withstand the harsh, corrosive chemicals that were handled. METTLER TOLEDO was able to provide a small scale that held up to the abuse of these chemicals with the Micro Vertex Floor Scale. The scale is 24” x 24” in size, and is coated with stainless steel and Teflon load cell cable covers. In addition, the Vertex rocker-pin design can withstand the abuse of the constant loading and unloading of these drums.
METTLER TOLEDO’s ability to come up with a solution at a fair price allowed us to complete an order for seventeen scales and controllers. The customer is very pleased with their new applications. They are now saving time and money through the improved efficiency and productivity that the LYNX controller and Micro Vertex floor scale provide.
