Inline skaters can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Different methods of braking exist, one of the most popular being the heel-stop technique. First, one leg is moved slightly forward, and then the body weight is transferred to the rear leg, with which the rubber heel is pressed against the road. Depending on the amount of pressure exerted, small amounts of rubber are abraded.
The abrasion effect was measured with an EL204 balance. The rubber heel was weighed before and after the braking maneuver. The difference of 0.0241g corresponds to the weight of the rubber left on the road.
